I felt it nicely tied up all the threads from the previous game including the apparent contradiction between the end of the first game and the events of the second. The plot kept me wanting to play on all the way through. So if the game is all hanging on the story how does that hold up? I personally loved it. In the longest Journey I enjoyed the story despite the dated graphics and the baffling puzzles in Dreamfall I enjoyed the story despite the janky controls and the terrible combat here the simplistic gameplay allows you to just get immersed in the story. I think this style of game works exceptionally well here. You can pick different options that will have minor differences in the later events which makes it enjoyable to play through a second time. It is also a choices matter but not really kind of game. The gameplay is mostly wandering around talking to people and occasional simple puzzles. There is even one part where you have to arrange a storyboard of the first game, it still took me two attempts when the game was fresh in my mind and I knew this puzzle was coming.

I suppose technically the game gives you enough information to explain the events but I don’t think you are going to really enjoy this game unless you are a fan of the series and have played the first games recently. So after my first play through I replayed The Longest Journey and Dreamfall before playing this game again.

Actually I do, it is because I am massively cheap, I’m not going to pay full price for a recent game when I can wait four years and pick it up for few quid in a sale.Īs I started to play the game I kept meeting characters that I couldn’t quite remember who they were and visiting locations that seemed vaguely familiar. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to play this.

I first played The Longest Journey and Dreamfall in 2017 and I absolutely loved them. If you have not you will have no idea what is going on. If you have recently played the previous games this is a gorgeous, satisfying conclusion to the trilogy with simplified gameplay allowing the story and world building to take centre stage. My second playthrough with that context was definitely more impactful and rewarding! That being said I wish I had played the other games first in hindsight, or at least watched some playthroughs. You absolutely can play and love this game without playing previous instalments, you just need to be aware of context clues and recognise going into it that there are some moments and callbacks to previous games that just won't hit as hard without the context of the first two games, especially toward the end. This makes the replay value pretty good: I've played all the way through twice, logging about 65 hours, and am still looking forward to coming back for more in the future.ĭespite this being the last game in the series, it was the first one I picked up. The choices you make in the game do genuinely have impact on the way the story plays out in a way that some choice-based games totally miss. It quickly became one of my all time favourites. This game is absolutely stunning, both visually and in terms of storytelling.
